I have written dozens, if not hundreds, of song reviews, performance reviews and have done interviews with various musicians, songwriters, DJs, singers and composers. I would consider that I have an eclectic music taste and a well-rounded understanding of the music industry.
I have discovered all different types of musicians. I have seen talented musicians who are unprofessional, professional musicians without talent, musicians with both talent and professionalism, etc. I have seen it all. I don’t just go after the top musicians, I turn every rock over and look for every musician who might have something worth offering.
While I can pride myself in being able to uncover obscure musicians and find exceptional music, I do have a downfall. While I do listen to a ton of music every month, I can’t possibly listen to every single release there is in every single genre and sub-genre of music, so consequently I rely on friends to clue me into the cool music that I am invariably missing. Hurray for friends!
A music promoter friend of mine saw me a week ago and we discussed what music I was listening to currently. She told me I was missing out on some good music by some new artists I probably never even heard of and gave me a big long list of some cool music she was promoting from some very new artists.
And that’s how I discovered “Whatever Happened to Forever” by Linda Tourje. It’s a song about a witty, funny, sweet and persistent girl whose husband left her out of the blue. It was sad and had a darker edge to it, but it fit my mood perfectly. It’s a song almost everyone can relate to, and she does a great job at conveying the emotion that we’ve all felt after a breakup.
It was beautifully written and relatable, and I found myself singing the lyrics in no time and thinking about the woman in the song and where life will take her. It definitely distracted me from my own problems and left me feeling excited to have discovered another great new song.
