The president <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/09\/24\/553214114\/trump-embroiled-in-two-controversies-about-professional-sports-race-and-culture\">doubled down on those comments<\/a> over the weekend, tweeting that players &#8220;should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag (or Country).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last year, NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial inequality. Over the course of the season, other players joined his protest by kneeling, sitting or raising their fists during the anthem. <\/p>\n<p>Kaepernick is not currently employed by any NFL team and has not spoken publicly about his movement in several months. However, other players have continued to protest during the anthem, and Trump&#8217;s statements led to widespread protests over the weekend. Most teams stood by their players&#8217; decision to protest. Here&#8217;s how the league, individual teams and a few other sports have weighed in:  <\/p>\n<p><strong>NFL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The National Football League and its Players&#8217; Association both issued statements supporting their players&#8217; rights after Trump&#8217;s comments on Friday.<\/p>\n<aside>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<aside>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/story\/0ap3000000849517\/article\/nfl-nflpa-respond-to-president-trumps-anthem-comments\">called Trump&#8217;s remarks &#8220;divisive&#8221;<\/a> and said they fail to understand &#8220;the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">New NFL statement <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XHPgVvPPfH\">pic.twitter.com\/XHPgVvPPfH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brian McCarthy (@NFLprguy) <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NFLprguy\/status\/911580084141772801\">September 23, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RES553548723\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP TWITTER LARGE GRAPHIC624\" ARIA-LABEL=\"TWEET\" --><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nflpa.com\/news\/de-smith-responds-donald-trump-player-protest\">In his statement<\/a>, NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith expressed support for the rights of the league&#8217;s players and said &#8220;no man or woman should ever have to choose a job that forces them to surrender their rights.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RES553547126\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><!-- END ID=\"RES553546910\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nflpa.com\/news\/de-smith-responds-donald-trump-player-protest\">NFLPA President Eric Winston<\/a> called Trump&#8217;s comments &#8220;a slap in the face to the civil rights heroes of the past and present&#8221; and said &#8220;we will not stop challenging others on how we can all come together to continue to make America the greatest country on earth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many of the league&#8217;s players and teams also issued statements or participated in protests prior to this weekend&#8217;s games:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arizona Cardinals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Team President Michael Bidwell <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.azcardinals.com\/news-and-events\/article-2\/Statement-From-Michael-Bidwill\/01b1e5c6-9f49-47bb-bbb8-1a4bd0ef8743\">issued a statement<\/a> supporting his players and describing football as &#8220;something that has always united us as Americans.&#8221; On whether the team would protest before its game Monday night, <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.azcardinals.com\/news-and-events\/article-2\/Cardinals-Respond-To-President-Trump%E2%80%99s-Remarks\/9301cb2b-f195-4fda-b56c-764eef79ef56\">defensive tackle Frostee Rucker said<\/a> &#8220;if there is anything like that, it&#8217;s going to be unified.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><strong>Atlanta Falcons<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.11alive.com\/sports\/nfl\/atlanta-falcons\/falcons-players-kneel-for-the-first-time-during-anthem-following-trumps-comments\/478249433\">Two players knelt<\/a> Sunday, and the team linked arms during the national anthem. The team has yet to issue any statement regarding Trump&#8217;s comments or protests around the league.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chicago Bears<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Bears <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/sports\/football\/bears\/ct-bears-steelers-protest-reaction-spt-0925-20170924-story.html\">stood and linked arms<\/a> during the national anthem on Sunday. Chairman George McCaskey issued the following statement on Sunday morning calling the political situation &#8220;divisive&#8221;: <\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Statement from Chicago Bears Chairman George H. Fans come to NFL games to watch great competition on the playing field and that&#8217;s where our focus should be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tight end Tyler Eifert, who is injured and did not make the trip to Green Bay for their game, had <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cincinnati.com\/story\/sports\/nfl\/bengals\/2017\/09\/09\/bengals-tyler-eifert-takes-public-stance-standing-anthem\/649654001\/\">previously spoken to the Cincinnati Enquirer<\/a> and <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@tylereifert\/whyistand-95bbe57a2436\">written a statement on Medium<\/a> about why he makes a point of standing for the anthem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cleveland Browns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/browns\/index.ssf\/2017\/09\/cleveland_browns_national_anth.html\">At least 20 players knelt<\/a>, while others stood and linked arms during the anthem, and owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam called Trump&#8217;s comments &#8220;misguided, uninformed and divisive&#8221; <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/browns\/index.ssf\/2017\/09\/jimmy_and_dee_haslam_president.html\">in a statement supporting their players<\/a>. Before an earlier game this season, <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/nfl\/news\/browns-national-anthem-protest-pregame-video-racial-inequality\/kfr6xh6m8t9y1vxh9obcus5kj\">the team played a video<\/a> in which players discussed racial inequality. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Dallas Cowboys<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Fort Worth Star-Telegram<\/em><a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.star-telegram.com\/sports\/nfl\/dallas-cowboys\/article175271431.html\">reported Cowboys players plan to protest<\/a> during the anthem before Monday night&#8217;s game. Owner Jerry Jones has previously said he feels &#8220;<a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nfl\/news\/jerry-jones-feels-so-strongly-that-players-should-stand-for-the-national-anthem\/\">so strongly<\/a>&#8221; about recognizing the flag and has not yet issued any statement regarding Trump&#8217;s comments or protests around the league.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Denver Broncos<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At least <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2017\/09\/24\/broncos-national-anthem-protest-mark-kiszla\/\">32 players protested<\/a> by kneeling or raising a fist during the anthem. On Saturday, team President and CEO Joe Ellis <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.denverbroncos.com\/news-and-blogs\/article-1\/Statement-from-PresidentCEO-Joe-Ellis\/8147bc61-890e-4fb3-a34f-75d344adeda3\">released a statement<\/a> supporting his players. The president <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/09\/24\/553214114\/trump-embroiled-in-two-controversies-about-professional-sports-race-and-culture\">doubled down on those comments<\/a> over the weekend, tweeting that players &#8220;should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag (or Country).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last year, NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial inequality. Over the course of the season, other players joined his protest by kneeling, sitting or raising their fists during the anthem. <\/p>\n<p>Kaepernick is not currently employed by any NFL team and has not spoken publicly about his movement in several months. However, other players have continued to protest during the anthem, and Trump&#8217;s statements led to widespread protests over the weekend. Most teams stood by their players&#8217; decision to protest. Fans come to NFL games to watch great competition on the playing field and that&#8217;s where our focus should be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tight end Tyler Eifert, who is injured and did not make the trip to Green Bay for their game, had <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cincinnati.com\/story\/sports\/nfl\/bengals\/2017\/09\/09\/bengals-tyler-eifert-takes-public-stance-standing-anthem\/649654001\/\">previously spoken to the Cincinnati Enquirer<\/a> and <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@tylereifert\/whyistand-95bbe57a2436\">written a statement on Medium<\/a> about why he makes a point of standing for the anthem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cleveland Browns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/browns\/index.ssf\/2017\/09\/cleveland_browns_national_anth.html\">At least 20 players knelt<\/a>, while others stood and linked arms during the anthem, and owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam called Trump&#8217;s comments &#8220;misguided, uninformed and divisive&#8221; <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/browns\/index.ssf\/2017\/09\/jimmy_and_dee_haslam_president.html\">in a statement supporting their players<\/a>. Owner Jerry Jones has previously said he feels &#8220;<a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nfl\/news\/jerry-jones-feels-so-strongly-that-players-should-stand-for-the-national-anthem\/\">so strongly<\/a>&#8221; about recognizing the flag and has not yet issued any statement regarding Trump&#8217;s comments or protests around the league.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Denver Broncos<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At least <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2017\/09\/24\/broncos-national-anthem-protest-mark-kiszla\/\">32 players protested<\/a> by kneeling or raising a fist during the anthem.
