But the list is far from exhaustive: &#8220;There are something like 5,000 euphemisms for periods,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>Why all the code words? Society has become <em>more<\/em> open to talking about menstruation in recent years (in fact, <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2015\/12\/31\/460726461\/why-2015-was-the-year-of-the-period-and-we-dont-mean-punctuation\">NPR declared 2015 the &#8220;year of the period&#8221;<\/a>), but periods are still a topic more often talked around than talked about.
