The Blues, on the other hand, came in as the storybook darlings \u2014 a team that was <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/boxscores\/?year=2019&amp;month=1&amp;day=2\">dead last in the NHL<\/a> just months ago and now has a shot at seizing its first Stanley Cup in the franchise&#8217;s <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/blues\/team\/history\">52-year history<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, the last time the Blues were in the final, <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/playoffs\/NHL_1970.html\">nearly half a century ago<\/a>, they were also playing the Bruins \u2014 and got posterized by <em>that<\/em> Bobby Orr goal. <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gOIlfV-XtBg\">You know the one<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RES731987925\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><!-- END ID=\"RES732065199\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK MEDIAPROMO PRIMARY\" --><\/p>\n<p>But if there was disparity in the franchises&#8217; paths to the Stanley Cup Final, there was little to be found in their play on the ice. They traded heavy body blows, neither team managing to open more than a one-game lead, and the momentum of the series swung back and forth with them.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;d be forgiven, for instance, for having figured the Bruins had it in the bag after their Game 3 drubbing of the Blues. And after a clutch <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KDVtE8E1S_I&amp;feature=onebox\">Game 5 win<\/a> gave the Blues a chance to clinch the cup on home ice, few expected them to follow it with <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z9LrgqK7x8k&amp;feature=onebox\">such a breathtaking dud<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both goalies, the Blues&#8217; rookie netminder Jordan Binnington and the Bruins&#8217; Tuukka Rask, rode hot hands into the final, but they too have been fairly up and down \u2014 especially Binnington, who has played like two different players at times. He has alternated stinkers \u2014 including <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/2019\/06\/02\/blues-teammates-back-goalie-jordan-binnington-after-rare-off-game\/\">getting benched<\/a> for the first time in his young career, in Game 3 \u2014 with some moments of eye-popping dominance.<\/p>\n<p>As these things are wont to go, the play has also gotten rather chippy.<\/p>\n<p>The Bruins&#8217; 42-year-old captain, <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wcvb.com\/article\/chara-all-action-little-talk-in-stanley-cup-pursuit\/27939890\">Zdeno Chara<\/a>, reportedly broke his jaw when he took a point-blank <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dzSTthX82Ik\">shot to the mouth<\/a> in Game 4, only to make it back <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/2019\/06\/watch-td-garden-erupt-as-zdeno-chara-gets-announced-as-game-5-starter\/\">out on the ice<\/a> three days later for Game 5, new protective face mask and all. Later that game, deep into the third period, the Blues scored the game-winning goal moments after a <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nhl\/2019\/06\/06\/blues-missed-tripping-call-bruins-stanley-cup-final\">controversial noncall<\/a> by the referees \u2014 which the <em>St. Louis Post-Dispatch, <\/em>in a magnificent bit of trolling, was only too happy to allude to in its headline: &#8220;<a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/sports\/hockey\/professional\/what-a-trip-blues-on-the-brink-of-winning-franchise\/article_20b92d90-beec-5da1-8d4f-bdaedda7c912.html\">What a trip!<\/a>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, that little phrase is a pretty fitting summary of a postseason that has had as many twists as the tape on a hockey stick \u2014 and an up-and-down final that has just about lived up to the chaos that came before it.
