Gavin Newsom on Tuesday extends coverage to low-income, undocumented adults age 25 and younger for the state&#8217;s Medicaid program. <\/p>\n<p>Since 2016, California <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ppic.org\/publication\/health-coverage-and-care-for-undocumented-immigrants\/\">has allowed<\/a> children under 18 to receive taxpayer-backed healthcare despite immigration status. And state officials expect that the plan will cover roughly 90,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of giving health benefits to undocumented immigrants is <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/psmag.com\/economics\/what-would-happen-if-the-government-covered-undocumented-immigrants-health-care\">supported<\/a> by most of the Democratic candidates running for president, and California&#8217;s move comes as the Trump administration continues to ramp up its hardline crackdown on unauthorized immigrants. On Tuesday, Newsom said the state law draws a sharp contrast with Trump&#8217;s immigration policies. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you believe in universal health care, you believe in universal health care,&#8221; Newsom <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CAgovernor\/videos\/366129283968781\/\">said<\/a>. &#8220;We are the most un-Trump state in America when it comes to health policy.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>In California, extending health benefits to undocumented immigrants is widely popular. A <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ppic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/ppic-statewide-survey-californians-and-their-government-march-2019.pdfhttps:\/www.ppic.org\/publication\/ppic-statewide-survey-californians-and-their-government-march-2019\/\">March survey<\/a> conducted by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California found that almost two-thirds of state residents support providing coverage to young adults who are not legally authorized to live in the country. <\/p>\n<aside>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>California, the institute <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/06\/12\/5-facts-about-illegal-immigration-in-the-u-s\/\">notes<\/a>, has more immigrants than any other state. And an estimated 14% of them are living in the state without legal status. <\/p>\n<p>A national poll suggests that many Americans across the country are far less accepting of the notion of giving health coverage to those who came into the U.S. illegally. A CNN poll conducted after the Democratic debates last month <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/2019\/images\/07\/01\/rel8a.-.democrats.and.healthcare.pdf\">found that<\/a> 59% of those surveyed do not think government-backed health coverage should be provided to undocumented immigrants. <\/p>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RES740147763\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>In most states, people living in the country illegally <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/research\/immigration\/immigrant-eligibility-for-health-care-programs-in-the-united-states.aspx\">are not<\/a> eligible for federal health insurance programs like Medicaid and Medicare, except is some cases, like medical emergencies and pregnancies, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. <\/p>\n<p>Republican lawmakers in California criticized the law, arguing that the state should be spending health care dollars on those living in the state legally. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are going to be a magnet that is going to further attract people to a state of California that&#8217;s willing to write a blank check to anyone that wants to come here,&#8221; <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/stone.cssrc.us\/content\/senator-stone-opposed-sb-29-another-expense-california-cannot-afford\">said<\/a> Republican Senator Jeff Stone at a May legislative hearing. &#8220;We are doing a disservice to citizens who legally call California their home.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The plan does not cover all unauthorized immigrants under 25, only those whose incomes are low income to qualify. State officials <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ebudget.ca.gov\/2019-20\/pdf\/BudgetSummary\/FullBudgetSummary.pdf\">estimate<\/a> in the first year the program will cover around 138,000 residents and cost California taxpayers $98 million. <\/p>\n<p>Trump has publicly attacked Newsom&#8217;s plans. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s crazy what they&#8217;re doing. It&#8217;s crazy,&#8221; Trump <a class=\"colorbox\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefings-statements\/remarks-president-trump-signing-h-r-3401\/\">told<\/a> reporters last week. &#8220;And it&#8217;s mean, and it&#8217;s very unfair to our citizens.
